Sometimes it is important to have fun with poetry. This poem came out of a poetry workshop where I wrote an alphabetic acrostic poem (the first line begins with A and the last line ends with Z). I also used as many cliches as I could think of because another member in our class was adroit at finding them in our poetry critique sessions.
I wrote this as the current political scene started rearing its ugly head and decided the only way to survive this crazy time, was to write a poem. This is what came out. You can hear the audio below. Have fun with your poems!
American As Apple Pie
A word to the wise
Big brother is watching
Chomping at the bit
Dressed to kill
Eyes in the back of his head
Full of himself
Get your ducks in a row
Have the last laugh
In the nick of time
Jump in with both feet
Keep your chin up
Let the good times roll
More than one way to skin a cat
Nip it in the bud
Open a can of worms
Push the envelope
Quicker than a New York minute
Rome wasn’t built in a day
Seize the moment
Take one for the team
Upset the apple cart
Variety is not always the spice of life
When all is said and done
Xerox man
You don’t miss the water till the well runs dry
Zig don’t zag
Zig don’t zag
Yours in poetry,
Carey
